M-1 Student Visa
M-1 Category: Vocational/Nonacademic Students
This visa category is very similar to the F-1 visa for academic and language students, except that it is for foreign students who are pursuing a full course of study at a vocational school or other recognized nonacademic institution. An M-1 may transfer schools but he/she may not change the focus of his/her studies. An M-1's stay is granted for one year and it may be extended for an additional two years. In terms of working, an M-1 visa allows students to apply for permission to work on the basis of practical training only, unlike an F-1 visa. Study at a community college or junior college would qualify for M-1 status.
